Description

Oodon is an aggregated content platform targeting geek pop culture. Its goal is to create one home for all fandoms to bring together all their content and merchandise, fractured across the internet. It’s a concept that has a market, but for some reason, it is not getting the traction that is expected.

ABCD Test

I started with a heuristic evaluation analyzing the navigation, features, signup process and first impressions of the website. The result highlights the weak points of the site. Also, the C&C confirmed that the project needs a reset with a different approach.

An in-depth look at the traffic analysis reveals how users leave the homepage without even trying to use the website, not only because is difficult to understand and learn the site, but also because the first bite on the home page is slow and users don’t want to wait.

Personas

After interviews and surveys, we’ve created three different personas that belong to the geek pop culture: The Creator, The Curator, and the Follower. The result was produced after an in-depth work on the affinity map and the answers collected from the survey that received about 200 responses.

Problem

Geek culture fans need a centralized platform dedicated to all things to geek culture because they must scour the internet to find interesting content, shop for geeky merchandise, and engage with other fans.

How might we create a space that brings together all their favorite content so that they can browse, post and discuss their favorite topics? Since Oodon is trying to build this new community, how might we plant the seeds by creating a homepage that sparks engagement such as adding content, curating content, and browsing?

Features Prioritization

Based on the interview, a card sorting and the C&C, we came up with a list of features that should be part of the website to improve the engagement of the users and push them to create content.

Sketches

We started Sketching the four potentials homepages keeping in focus the result of the initial research and problem found. The ideal goal was to find a solution that could fit the users’ needs. We were lucky to work on this project during the Anime Expo in Down Town, LA and so, we when to the Expo to get the best feedback from the ideal users.
The result indicated that a traditional homepage would help users with the understanding and the purpose of the website along with an editorial section that could keep the site alive and up to date with news and articles.

Solution

After performing an ABCD Test that I created according to the research and interview results, I concluded that Oodon needs a new approach to the homepage design. This resulted in the design of four possible homepage following different concepts: Traditional, Editorial, Community, and Search.

Quote from Oodon’s CEO:
“Can’t thank you enough. I’m getting re-inspired and think there’s actually a way out of the mess we’re in :)”
